For the curious, here's a picture of the new PhotoCD device
which I saw at CeBit in Hannover, Germany this week. It looks
quite different from your normal CD-ROM device. It will read
normal CD-ROMs, Photo CD-ROMs (Kodak), and audio CD's. It can
also plug into a television set and display Photo CD's.
Photo is Gray-scale 8-bit.

#### BINHEX astronaut-big-startup.hqx ****

From: motcid!marble!derosa@uunet.UU.NET (John DeRosa)
Subject: Astronaut StartupScreen (BIG!)
Large Start Up Screen - Astronaut
=====================
This is a really big startup screen of a shuttle astronaut
floating outside the space ship. Very cool.
If you like this startup screen, please send me email at
the following address -> derosa@rtsg.mot.com. My kids
think it is cool to receive e-mail from around the globe.
This is startup screen measures 1152 pixels wide by
870 pixels tall. It can also be used as desktop patterns
with tools like ColorDesk and DeskPict.
To use this file as a startup screen, rename it "StartupScreen"
and place it in your system folder. To use it with DeskPict,
rename it "DeskPicture" and place it in your system folder.
I have created this screen for use with my 21"
Apple color monitor. It will also work great with any of
the larger monitors from 16" to 20" except that the image
may be a clipped. Monitors larger than 21" will suffer
from the syndrome I fixed, i.e. startup screens
of less than full screen size.
These screens were created from 72dpi startup screens for
13" color monitors (640 pixels by 480 pixels). I used
Adobe Photoshop to resize the images. This means that the
resulting image is about 39dpi.
I have a very cool 1152x870 image of a chessboard at 72
dpi but the color comes out incorrect during startup. I
tried Thors Init to no avail. Anyone know the fix?

Work No. 434

40" x 28"
The accompanying PICT file is a 640x480 16-bit color scan of the above named
work, suitable for using as a background screen on a 13" or 14" monitor. The
screen looks fantubulous when you set your screen depth to 16 bits, but it looks
fine in 8-bit color or 8-bit greyscale.
If you like this screen and would like to see some other Giger screens, drop
me a note in e-mail. Since I use a 13" monitor at work, and a Giger fan co-worker
uses a 16" monitor, I'll probably be doing screens for both monitor sizes. If there
is enough demand, I can post versions for 16" and larger monitors.

BOB(C)1991-GRAFX indeed, inc.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What is BOB?
Well, BOB is an interactive multimedia comic strip. BOB started out as
your basic "put a grin on your face" newspaper comic strip. It was created
by my friend and colleague Martin V. Leone. The strip was published in a
school newspaper in the late 1980's. This current strip is the first in
the newspaper series. We decided to give BOB the ol'analog to digital
conversion by introducing him to the (about to explode) multimedia age. He
was re-created in MacroMind Director 3.0 and compiled with MacroMind
Player 3.0.
Depending on the response to this strip, we will then decide on
re-creating others in the original series. Keep your eyes open for more
from us, and if you have any comments (preferably good ones), please drop
us a note on Internet at:
hatch@andromeda.rutgers.edu (or) steven_hatch@axon.rutgers.edu
We are not asking for anything of a monetary value for this, we just ask
you to keep that "Magic" Johnson smile :) And with that, do something
good for the environment and your own health.
REQUIREMENTS: To run BOB, you need a minimum of 2 megabytes and at least a
Macintosh plus.

It is about 1.5 MB in size at this time.
All clip art in this file is in 72 dpi paint format and stored in an
indexed hypercard stack. This version contains a card size that fills a
13" monitor so as to get some of the larger pictures to fit, however those
with smaller monitors can use this stack by scrolling around a bit.

Welcome to the BrewArt Collection (for Macintosh)!
copyright 1994 George (Ty) Tempel
ABSTRACT:
This collection is the first edition of a set of brewing
related clip art that I am in the process of creating and
compiling. I have used some of these elements on my beer
labels, and a few of my network-friends have found them
helpful as well.
DESCRIPTION:
The artwork is provided in the form of PICT files, which
are easily handled by nearly all major applications in
the Macintosh universe. I considered converting some stuff
to EPS (postscript) format, but not everyone out there has
access to nice postscript printers, such as myself. Since
the files are PICTS, it is feasible to convert them to
one or more various DOS/Windows formats, but you will loose
information in the conversion process. Since I don't have
a DOS/Windows machine (insert large grin here), I cannot
do the conversion for you, so it is left as an exercise
for the user (didn't you hate it when textbooks would
do that?).
Just for the record, I created the artwork using
Canvas 3.5, Color-It 2.3.2, and Adobe Streamline 3.
Some of the artwork is pre-colored, but you can change
that if you like. I have an accellerated Macintosh II
(Dove Racer, 32MHz), a DeskWriter inkjet printer,
and the Logitech ScanMan. I also find that if you wish
to use Avery labels, try to find a box of #5164, which
are 3.33" x 4". They come right off of the bottle when
you use a little B-Brite cleanser, and some graphics
programs support the Avery label formats for templates
(mine didn't, however).
THE FINE PRINT:
This collection is released as brew/credit-ware (I know,
an awkward term, but you'll see that it fits). If you
decide to use any of the clip art from the collection, you
must give me, George (Ty) Tempel, partial credit for the
artwork and send me a bottle of the homebrew that you've
labelled. It's just that simple. No messy fees, etc. Please
remember that it is unlawful to send alcohol via the
US Postal Service, but private carriers (UPS, FedEx, Airborne,
etc), _can_ ship the stuff, just make sure that the brew
is securely packaged (try placing the bottles into tight
plastic bags just in case...). I have shipped several
bottles without problems, but sometimes I label the
contents as "food", "yeast culture equipment", or "glassware"
and have never had a problem (knock on formica).

Also, as an added feature, any text in the clip art is
provided in the form of bezier outlines, so you don't
need to have the fonts on your system. This allows
a safe distribution method, as fonts are copyrighted
and usually cannot be freely distributed. Most of the
advanced graphics software today has the ability to convert
outline fonts (PostScript or TrueType) into bezier
outlines that can be edited with the application, just as
if you had drawn them yourself.
Just for the record, I created the artwork using

are easily handled by nearly all major applications in
the Macintosh universe. I considered converting some stuff
to EPS (postscript) format, but not everyone out there has
access to nice postscript printers, such as myself. Since
the files are PICTS, it is feasible to convert them to
one or more various DOS/Windows formats, but you will loose
information in the conversion process. Since I don't have
a DOS/Windows machine (insert large grin here), I cannot
do the conversion for you, so it is left as an exercise
for the user (didn't you hate it when textbooks would
do that?).
Just for the record, I created the artwork using
Canvas 3.5, Color-It 2.3.2, Adobe Streamline 3,
and Adobe Illustrator 5.
Some of the artwork is pre-colored, but you can change
that if you like. I have an accellerated Macintosh II
(Dove Racer, 32MHz), a vintage DeskWriter inkjet printer,
and the Logitech ScanMan. I also find that if you wish
to use Avery labels, try to find a box of #5164, which
are 3.33" x 4". They come right off of the bottle when
you use a little B-Brite cleanser, and some graphics
programs support the Avery label formats for templates
(mine didn't, however).
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THE FINE PRINT...
I can be reached via the following

As of this date, the release of my 3rd collection, not a
soul has sent me anything. Nada. I'd at the very least
like to hear from you, if it's not too much trouble!
Comments and suggestions are welcome, and stay tuned for
more collections to be released at later dates!

Subject: Carina Nebula Startupscreen
Here's an unusual startupscreen for you - a roughly circular image of a
nebula in the Southern constellation Carina (I think). The image has been
neatly merged with a 512x384 black background, making it just right for the
12" RGB screen. Original source was an FTP archive it Europe (but where'd
they get it?). Caveat: this image may not be suitable for those of you with
less than 16 bits/pixel unless it's properly dithered. Used in its present
form, at 256 colors you might well get something which looks quite a lot like,
er, puke. (Then again, some of you might want precisely that effect as a
startupscreen...)

Work No. 205
Painted in 1974
Acrylic on Paper
40" x 28"
The accompanying PICT file is a 640x480 16-bit color scan of the above named
work, suitable for using as a background screen on a 13" or 14" monitor. The
screen looks fantubulous when you set your screen depth to 16 bits, but it
looks fine in 8-bit color or 8-bit greyscale.
At the request of the moderator, I'll be limiting my posts of these Giger
screens to one per week. Since 640x480 is the most common color monitor
size out there, I'll be uploading those first. If you've got a 16" or

This works great in After Dark's logo module.
By the way, scanning this kind of crud in isn't as easy as it seems. I
had to crop out the text and replace it with other parts of the logo, then
replace all the background red to make it even, and then I had to smooth
out the glowing circle. Sharp eyes will be able to pick out the paste lines
on the left and right near the bottom of the circle. The rest of you won't
notice. Anyhow, then I had to play extensively to make the icon without the
square border. All in all, it beat working. ;)

This is a 640x480, 256-color Macintosh StartupScreen, compressed with
Stuffit Lite 3.04 and binhexed with same.
To use, just download it, de-binhex it, unStuff it (Stuffit Expander

A 'Read Me' file is included with more information.
This screen is my interpretation of the Yellow Sign, a sigil of
madness and evil, from author Robert W. Chambers' book "The King in
Yellow."
The Sign (and the mythical play "The King in Yellow," the subject of
Chambers' book) were later used by horror writer H.P. Lovecraft, and
Chambers' creation was an inspiration for Lovecraft's similarly-mythical
occult tome, the Necronomicon.
This startupscreen depicts the Yellow Sign in all its dim, swirling
glory, with "The King In Yellow" spelled out across the screen in
creepy lettering.
Room has been left for two rows of extention/control panel icons to

Subject: Kings Cross Coke
Jim Henry recently asked if anyone knew where he might find the subject
program. It appears to have fallen off the archives, so here it is again.
I have included an excerpt from the Read Me that accompanies the program.
Kings Cross Coke 2.0
by John Rotenstein
The Coca-Cola symbol is undoubtedly the most recognisable in the world
due to the massive marketing efforts undertaken by the Coca-Cola Company.
One particular Coca-Cola advertisement can be found in Kings Cross, just
outside the CBD of Sydney, Australia. Not only is it one of the largest
advertisements in the country, it also proudly flaunts its messages with
a barrage of flashing lights, not all of which are always working
correctly.
This program is a tribute to that sign and to the attractiveness of its
multiple light patterns. While the real sign has only seven patterns,
which constantly repeat, KINGS CROSS COKE is capable of displaying
thousands of light patterns in a totally random fashion.
For lucky colour users, you can even randomise the colours of the sign's
elements. It's rather hoopy, really.
Kings Cross Coke operates under MultiFinder to give you the ultimate
background pattern.
It's the real thing.
Kings Cross Coke is distributed under the HappiWare* System:
IF YOU LIKE IT, REMEMBER TO SMILE!
But seriously, if you do like Kings Cross Coke, I would appreciate your
sending me a picture postcard of your home town, just so I can see how
far this little program has spread.

P.S. Yes, I know that normal Coke doesn't have NutraSweet, but the logo
was too good not to use.

I didn't give much of an introduction to the release of the first volume
so I will make up for it now with Volume 2.
Introduction
Photos for your Desktop is collection of desktop artwork designed to sit
on your Macintosh desktop and provide something restful for your eye to
look at while you go about your Macintosh business. Each set consists of
three parts-
The first part is the "Viewer".
This contains color previews of all the photos, captions that make some
comments on the image content, photo notes explaining how the image was
taken and/or subsequently edited, and a nifty locations map showing where
in the world the photograph was taken. The Viewer can also be used to
install the artwork in the appropriate places if you are not over-savvy
with that sort of thing.
The second part is the picture collection proper.
There are desktop picture files for each of the photos and each can be
used either as a startupscreen or, more usually, as a desktop background
using either the shareware program Decor or similar, or the commercial
program Now FunPictures. Each picture file is a full-screen version of
the small photograph contained in the viewer and consequently looks quite
impressive once installed.
The third and last part of the collection is a set of pixel patterns
derived from the photographs. These are all 128 x 128 pixels in full
color. The patterns, with exceptions, are mostly "photograph-orientated"
(compared with the other genres of patterns- textures and cartoons).
Formats are available for the shareware programs Desktop Textures and
Before Dark -- ppat -- and for the commercial programs Wallpaper(tm) and
The Living Desktop(tm).
There have been two Photos for your Desktop volumes so far. Volume 1 was
an "Around the World" set containing postcard-style pictures of scenic
places in a few far apart countries.
Volume 2, which is the set accompanying this document, is more
thematically based and is titled "Earth, Sea, & Sky". It contains
timeless natural imagery with no human artefacts or activity present. All
photos in this volume were taken on the East coast of Australia, and there
are... pictures of waves crashing against rocks, sunlight glinting off
the sea around a sandy beach, sunset soaked clouds, palm trees against a
fiery sky ...that sort of thing.
Each Photos for you Desktop volume has a discountable shareware fee of
US$10 and is normally supplied compressed on 2 HD disks.
This Downloadable Edition (well, downloadable if you have a fast modem,
it's about 750K binhexed) contains a fully operational Viewer containing
10 color pictures & pattern previews, 1 full-screen desktop picture, and
four 8-bit / 16-bit pixels patterns in all formats.
Hope you like it. Any comments would be most welcome.

Hello !
Well, it seems that we won't be getting any PowerPC powered
computers until spring 1994, but your computer is already PowerPC ready
and you can easily put one in it by dragging this startup screen into your
system folder. The picture was taken from the 10 pages ad in Computer World.

Here's another of my Infini-D startup screens for the archives.
Nice and colourful, 16" size (read the readme about other sizes).
Says "Welcome to Power Macintosh" in big chrome letters with lots

About Wes' QuickTime Illustration...
)1993, Wes Burian
August 1993
All the talk a couple of months back on comp.multimedia
inspired me to whip up an illustration pertaining to
QuickTime and video editing, and the whole thing. QuickTime
and video editing is still a hot topic, so I decided to post
this so that other people than I could stare at it on their
monitors.
It's provided as a 72 dpi teachtext PICT. The original file
is a 300 dpi Photoshop file, so if you want to have a look at
that, mail me. Or if you're in need of some other
illustration, contact me as well, I do them from time to
time. Or just mail me for the fun of it anyways, I like to
hear from other computer artists/designers.
This illustration is provided for your use however you want
to use it. At 72 dpi it's not horribly useful for anything
except looking at, but as long as no changes are made and you
don't make an exact replica of it yourself, feel free to do
whatever you want with it free of any legalities.

Similar in style to the 840 one, Different camera angle, different surfaces.
It's 16" size - I figured that it's not hard to resize it for 13" screens.
Due to a technical hitch, it's not anti-aliased, but still looks good!

Here's a startupscreen for 840AV users.
It says "Welcome to Macintosh" in silver above "840AV" in chrome over a
red and yellow blobby surface. There's space at the bottom for your
extensions! All rendered and anti-aliased in Infini-D. It's a 640*480
24-bit PICT, and so it suitable for 13" or similar. If anybody really
likes it, I could be persuaded to re-render it at higher resolutions!

I have scanned in several photos that either my wife, Jane, a friend, Terry
Beaumier and I took on 22 February 1994, just 5 days after the 6.8
Northridge/Reseda earthquake. I thought there would be many people who
would like to see photos of some of the destruction other than what you can
get out of the media. I scanned them on a Sun (ugh!) and saved them at the
highest quality JPEG allows (it was the only format that the software had
in common with the Mac). I decided to sample them at 150 dpi in order to
keep the images large enough to show good detail but also small enough to
make it worth the download time. All the images are less than 700 Kb (15

The self extracting disk doubler archive contains 2 aldus freehand files
of the Enterprise NCC1701D (From the new tv series). These are the
same illustrations they actually use on the set of the series and in the
new publication "Star Fleet Technical Manual" out for Christmas.
Check out the little goodies on some of the decks, such as a pterydactyl,
a boat, a "slippery when wet" sign, etc. The illustration in the Tech Manual
has lots more, such as C3PO and R2D2.
Printed out full size, it takes 12 sheets in landscape mode, and requires
HelveticaUltra Compressed (substitute Helvetica Narrow at 70% compression
to imitate this effect).
I got this from America Online.
Have fun...

I found this as a gif on one of the Star Trek newsgroups. It is
supposedly a picture of the next enterprise, the ncc-1701-e. I heard a
rumor that the ship to be in the next trek series (ST:Voyager) would be
numbered ncc-1701-f, so this may not be it. I jpegged it to make it ultra
small.
This file is a binhex'd self-extracting archive. You need a program that
can read JPEG (.jpg) files to view this. You can use JPEGView, which is
available at sumex, in grf/util/jpeg-view-321.hqx. I believe it is freeware.
I have seen no indication that this picture is copyrighted or even
created by Paramount, so you are on your own to decide what to do with
it. I am merely relaying it from the newsgroup.

some more frames to avoid a motion halt in AFTER DARK. This eliminates it. The
picture is in 8-bit color and will shift back and forth in an random type
pattern giving the illusion of motion. Engine pods are animated and so are
lights on the Enterprise Star Ship. Suggest you put this in AFTER DARK with
the MultiMode and adding Warps in background. Looks great.

Hello !
Attached are 3 pictures scanned from the Power Mac brochure. The 3
pictures include:
* All 3 models together.
* Large PowerMac 7100 (showing the fire picture on the monitor).
* The PPC601 chip (on the backround of the PowerMac factory or something
like that).
As I said it was scanned from the Apple brochure, so all rights
reserved to Apple Computer Inc. (which I've got nothing to do with...).
The pictures were scanned with an Apple Color OneScanner using
Ofoto, manipulated using ColorIt and than compressed into JPEG compression
using the Apple Picture Compressor. All 3 are packed in one StuffIt archive
and binhexed.
Enjoy !
BTW: I saw a posting a couple of days ago, somebody complained that you
don't have the Apple logo on the archives. Of course, everybody knows what
you get on the clipboard when you open the "puzzle" in the apple menu and
choose copy...

Timothy Eckel of the Commodore Amiga submitted several 3-D
stereoscopic images on GEnie. COINS is a 3-D image of several rows
of American Silver dollars. I am submitting this as a dedication
to those who have difficulty in seeing ANYTHING with the standard
'dot' type stereo images. Viewing this image will reveal a row of
silver dollars without all those silly dots. ;>p
However, if you cross your eyes a bit, they will take on a 3-D
effect. This file was decompressed with MacLHA2.10.2 and then
converted to the Mac world from Amiga IFF via
GraphicConverter1.6.2. View with a suitable GIF viewer, such as GIF
Converter.
No compression is necessary since this is a GIF picture.
Process it with StuffIt Expander or any other suitable deBINHEXer
utility.

Greetings,
Attached is a spectacular 640x480x256 GIF image by David Palermo. It's a
surrealistic rendering of a sort of "cosmic wristwatch" on a marble surface.
It's very hard to describe, but it's visually stunning, and makes a superb
desktop image. I downloaded it from America Online and re-upload it here with
his permission. David's description follows:
"This image is of a woman (my friend's wife) sitting inside a time piece
looking out into space which is inside the time piece. Does that make sense?
I guess you will have to see it to understand."
Please note that the correct title is "Timetraveller". It may have been
truncated somewhere along the way...
David can be reached at (619) 944-9907 or at Space7 on America Online.

This is a color STEREO Macintosh PICT file of the famous
American actor, orator, writer, and cowpuncher: Will
Rogers 1879-1935. He was born in Oolagah, Indian Territory
(now Oklahoma) on November 4, 1879. He became famous for his
vaudeville act with Ziegfeld's Follies in which he chewed gum
and twirled his lariat while delivering a commentary on the
government. These photographs were taken by the stereo photo
company "Keystone" at one of 1920 presidential conventions.
This image is one of over a thousand high resolution antique
3D images available on the ILLUMINATI 3D-CD-ROM. This disk
contains a large collection of famous people, a world tour
of Europe/Asia/America, American Indians, Jerusalem and the
Middle East, World War I, Presidents, ...etc. Most images are
75 to 150 years old.
In order to view this image in 3D you will need to use Red/Blue
"Anaglyph" glasses. Cheap cardboard ones can be obtained at
comic book stores and they are also provided with the CD-ROM
(if you can't find one, write me and I'll mail you one for
a $1). Place the Red filter over your left eye, the Blue
one should be over your right eye.

Hello, asian art lovers:
Zhou Jun is a Shanghai born (1955) chinese ink painter, who
I happen to know because he now lives in Nijmegen, the
Netherlands, like I do. ZJ belongs to the elite circle of
painters that completed the central academy for fine arts
in Beijing.
This is a scan I made of a 10x10cm reproduction of a 53x53cm
"free style" ink painting by him depicting a young woman
transporting fruits.
It measures 698 by 689 pixels and is in 8 bit colours.
In deBINHEXED and unSTUFFed from it occupies 497KBytes.
The scan only approximates the original, but still makes for
a nice startup screen I hope you will enjoy!
